It is approximately 17-20 kilometers to the east of Yogyakarta. The main temple on the Prambanan temple complex leads to the east, with the temple height reaching 47 meters. Prambanan temple is often called by the name of Roro Jonggrang Temple. Based on Siwagrha inscription, Prambanan Temple was built around the year 850 CE by the Kings of the Sanjaya dynasty precisely by Rakai Pikatan which was later expanded by Balitung Maha Sambu during the reign of Medang Mataram. The building is intended to give a passion for Tri-Murti, the three main gods of Hindu religion.

Hinduism knows Tri-Murti, consisting of the god of Brahmana as the creator god, Shiva as the god of Destruction and Wishnu as the god of tenders. In the Siwagrha inscription there is a description of the historical events of the war between the Balaputeradewa of the Sailendra dynasty against the Rakai Pikatan of the Sanjaya dynasty. The defeated Balaputeradewa fled to Sumatra. The consolidation of the Sanjaya dynasty was the beginning of the new reign that was inaugurated with the construction of a cluster of Prambanan temples.

The occurrence of natural disasters such as earthquakes and Merapi eruption and the displacement of the central government of Sanjaya dynasty to East Java has destroyed the temple complex. Prambanan temple is known to return when a Dutch named C.A. Lons visited Java island in 1733 and reported about the ruins of a temple overgrown by the shrub.
